Pisces

Pisces
I've been awfully slack about posting my magazine illustrations lately, but was so pleased with the way Fair Lady magazine used this one for Pisces that I got down to taking a pic to share.

Have a good weekend, everyone (and thanks for all your votes!).

Virgo again

I've been doing horoscope illustrations for FairLady magazine for a year now, and I reckon they improved a lot over the course of last year (from this to this).

We're back to Virgo again.
This time around, I'm trying out a different style from last year's cutouts. This was drawn with charcoal, then scanned, reversed, and the colour blocks were composed in Illustrator.

And whoops, I somehow neglected to show these other illustrations from the September Fairlady magazine. Better do it now, before the October issue hits the shelves.

This is my usual "Whats For Supper?" page, illustrating four recipes.

And this illustration for an article about dieting for a bikini body was all made in Illustrator. Summer looms!

Horoscopes - Leo

I really am happy with the way the Leo horoscope illustration for the August edition of FairLady magazine turned out.

22.6.07

Cancerians

The July horoscope in Fairlady magazine is for Cancer. Flummoxed me a bit (pincers? sideways scuttling?), but eventually I settled on this.
And this is how they used it in the mag. I really like the little crop they did for the second page.

Have a good weekend!

PS: Cape Town readers, take a peek at Nice Things to find out about the new WhatiftheWorld exhibition space opening on Saturday.

Gemini

I forgot to put up the horoscope illy that was published in the June issue of FairLady magazine. It's Gemini.

It's Gemini. Did I say that twice?

This one got printed in a rather more vivid shade of purple than you see it here - bright cerise, actually! But because of my genuine problem with purple things (yukky) it turned into a bit of a battle of wills with the client. It seems that they won.
Tech: Adhesive vinyl cut with my knife, then scanned and coloured in Photoshop.

24.4.07

Taurus

The last of my illustrations in the May issue of FairLady magazine - the Taurus horoscope.

I hope the "bull in a china shop" reference comes through ok?

I'm not convinced that this is particularly successful illustration. I think there's too much going on, and the woman should have been a bit more substantial to hold her own amongst all the elements. I loved coming up with all the different shapes for the "china" though.

Horoscopes on Warm Toast?

Ok, so shoot me for posting twice about these illustrations for the FairLady 2007 horoscope special. I put this page together for my online portfolio. , at Warm Toast Cafe , and they looked so pretty all together like this, I just couldn't resist.

Take a visit to Warm Toast Cafe sometime. I've been using this free online portfolio for illustrators for a few months now, which has led to a couple of work nibbles so far.

And even if it doesn't bring in the work, it's great to have an online porty to which I can send people.

Aries

The April issue of FairLady magazine is out, and here's the latest horoscope illustration.

Cut vinyl, scanned and then coloured in Photoshop.

16.2.07

Pisces

Something fishy for you - my illustration for the Pisces horoscope, to be found in Fair Lady magazine this month.
Tech stuff: As per usual, I cut the figure out of sticky vinyl with my knife and also, bizarrely, the tiles in the pool. That took rather a long time. After scanning, colour was added in Photoshop and bubbles were made with Illustrator.

Inspiration courtesy of the glorious sea-edge public pool in Sea Point, just around the hill from us.

Aquarius

The February issue of Fair Lady magazine has published my horoscope illustration for Aquarius.

What do you mean, you'd never guess that practically everyone I know is pregnant?!

I made this by cutting each element separately from black vinyl with my NT cutter, then scanning and colouring in Photoshop.

This illustration and a glorious sunset on Clifton 3rd beach on Wednesday evening means I've got beaches on my mind, so here's a plug for my beautiful city, Cape Town. Boy, am I lucky to live here.

Horoscope Tshirt

Check it out! Fairlady magazine has made T-shirts with my star sign illustrations (see looong post two postings back). You can pick your own sign and get a Tshirt made up!

Cheap cheap! Going fast! Don't miss out.

PS: I should just add that FairLady specifies that this offer is only available for South African readers. Should anyone actually want one, let me know and I'll tell you how to order. I guess I could also order on your behalf and post it to you if you live far away. Anyway, if anyone's interested, let me know and a plan can be made.

Horoscope Special!

Rod Suskin's 2007 horoscope predictions have been published in Fair Lady, with placeholder illustrations for each star sign done by me this year. Seeing as Fair Lady's a fashion mag, I decided to go with a theme of accessories. Scroll down to find yours!
Above, the full-page intro pic that had to tie in with a perfume promo which was about which scent is linked to your star sign (wierd). Look closely and see star sign symbols used as brand logos.
Technical info: All the illustrations are cut from black vinyl with my NT cutter, then scanned and coloured with Photoshop.
(aargh! Blogger's driving me nuts! Can't get paragraph breaks no matter how hard I try! My inner control freak needs breaks, so I'm using coloured inks instead!)

Taurus.
Aries

Libra ("bra"... geddit?)

Virgo

Leo

Cancer (pinchy hand - ok, I battled with this one)

Gemini (matching shoes?)

Pisces

Aquarius (Eau de...)

Capricorn

Saggitarius

Scorpio

I'm not a believer, but the prediction for Sagittarius did say I must check up on long-neglected health issues, such as my teeth, and yesterday I happened to go and see the dentist for the first time in a long time. Spooky...

My scepticism was rather tested by the rather likeable prediction of global fame and fortune though. Today: the dentist, tomorrow: stardom!

12.12.06

Capricorn

The January Fair Lady is on the shelves with a 2007 Horoscope special, illustrated by me, so I've got a bumper crop of illustrations to post. Yay!

I'm rushing, with a lunchtime deadline today, so I'll start with a stand-alone Capricorn and put the rest up tomorrow.

As usual, I first made a cut-out in black vinyl with my NT cutter, then scanned it and popped in colours using Photoshop and a touch of Illustrator.

15.11.06

Saggitarius

The December edition of Fairlady magazine is out, so I can publish my Saggitarius illustration. I put extra care into this one, 'cos I'm a Sagg myself!

Made using cut paper and vinyl, finished in Photoshop and Illustrator.

10.10.06

Scorpio

Scorpio illustration for Fair Lady magazine. As with my other horoscope illustrations for Fair Lady, the silhouette is cut from black vinyl with my NT cutter, and then I fiddle around in Photoshop to finish up.

I'm working on Capricorn now. Hmm, what shall I do...?

31.7.06

Libra

My Libra illustration for Fair Lady magazine. I cut the silhouette from black vinyl with my trusty blade, created the background in Illustrator, and composed and tidied in Photoshop.

13.7.06

Virgo

I'm thrilled to have been commissioned to do a year's worth of horoscope illustrations for Fair Lady magazine. This is my first, for Virgo. The saucy neat freak is cut vinyl, and the rest is a mixture of scanned paper, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
