Cold Trees

It's amazing. I keep trawling my archive for more things to post, and I keep finding stuff. I dread the day it all runs dry...

In the meantime, here is 'Cold Trees' from the Drawing Room II exhibition in 2005.

I made this with white adhesive vinyl, cut with my NT cutter and stuck onto woodgrain vinyl, block mounted. Edition of three, all sold.

PS: Check out Bloesem, found yesterday through DesignSponge. Apart from the lovely things to look at, South African readers should enjoy pitting their Afrikaans against the Dutch text. I sent the link to Jesse, who commented that if you know Afrikaans, reading Dutch is like blurring your eyes - you can't see all the details, but you get the general idea. Well put, Jesse!

Last Drawing Room 3 posting

And even more for Drawing Room 3, opening on Friday. I spent yesterday with my friend Cornelius and his drill press, making spade bit holes in the back to glue washers on so that these weighty objects can hang flush with the wall. All of the pics on this posting are smallish, but the previous images are pretty darn heavy.

Titles, from top left, moving down in rows, left to right:

Restios II, Inflorescences, Orla, Pincushion, Inflorescence, Dandelion I, II and III. All acrylics on meranti boards, 150 x 230mm

More DR3 pics

Three more pics for Drawing Room 3. They're all on canadian beech, and I'm waxing them to give a lovely gleam and wholesome smell!

Top: Mycelia (400 x 240mm)
Bottom: Garden Vines (400 x 240mm)

DR3 sneak preview

Drawing Room 3 opens on September 1 at What if the World gallery in Hope Street, Cape Town. These are two of the works I'm putting on show, called Restios I (top) and Dandelions II.

Everything'sl on wood this time, although I'm still using my NT cutter and vinyl to make them. I've been cutting vinyl masks and painting over them with acrylics (as in Dandelions II) or wood stain (as in Restios I).

I'm loving making these works, but wish I'd had more than a month to get going, as I feel I'm only just getting the kind of effect I wanted. I'll show more later.

Fridge magnets

I use my trusty NT cutter to cut these from adhesive vinyl, and then use lo-tack tape to stick them down on magnetic sheets that I also cut.

For the Kinder Kunst show at What if the World I thought I'd be smart and get some of them cut at a vinyl cutting place, but the bill was astronomical! Ouch! Much cheaper and more fun to cut by hand.

Drawing Room 3

Drawing Room 3 is the third in a series of highly successful exhibitions of a group of illustrators' work. This year, we're showing at the marvellous What if the World... gallery in Hope Street, Cape Town. Find out more by clicking here.

DR3 detail

Detail of the Drawing Room 3 poster - probably the most complex cutout I've ever done!
I was very relieved not to rip or bubble it when sticking the vinyl down.
