Cutouts, cut out
This is an illustration job I did much earlier in the year, supposed to be part of an ad campaign for a newspaper, but due to unfathomable mysteriousnesses, the ads never got published (which is why I've blanked out their logo).
Each one is cut from sections of the newspaper that reflect the mood of the cutout. So the first is from the Gardening and Home section, the one below is from Current Affairs/Business, and the last is from the Design and Lifestyle section. The idea is that the paper is so good, it practically comes to life!
It's a pity they didn't see the light of day, but the experience of assisting and styling on the shoot was unbelieveably valuable for me. It was also really nice to work witha most delightful art director !

Gorgeous, and so well-executed! I like the first one best, maybe because the background scene fits so well. Though the metal coffee cup in the background works well with the business section, too.
I just saw these on Design*Sponge today, was it a tutorial? These are beautiful and I can't believe the paper didn't run the ads. Crazy people...

Beautiful. Do you cut these out with an exacto knife? I cannot imagine doing this on newspaper! Cut outs are all over the place now and I love them.

Fantastic, absolutely breathtaking! I to do a similar sort of thing as well, however I am not nearly as talented as you obviously are! But I am curious, what type of knife do you use? I read that you don't like to use clunky exacto blade, and noticed a picture of the knife and all, but what is the lay name or location or type of place where this can be purchased? Thanks so much for the inspiration.

Anonymous, I use a quite ordinary craft knife, and insert the very steeply-pointed NT blades that snap off when blunt (NT is a japanese brand of blades and knives). I don't think we get the Exacto brand over here, but NT is probably quite similar
